Masterclass with Mads Nissen

photo.circle announces an exciting 14-week masterclass with award winning Danish photographer Mads Nissen. The masterclass is designed for advanced photographers and photojournalists who are interested in storytelling through images. It will enable participants to become better at telling visual stories about personal subject matters.

Participants will use photojournalism and documentary photography to discover, investigate and convey stories about places and people, that they believe the world should care about. These can be both big and small stories- as long as they are important to the person telling the story. By analyzing picture stories, looking at their structure, discussing the journalism behind them, participants will find out how visual language can be used to tell their specific stories.

•    The masterclass will cater to 12 participants and will take place at photo.circle headquarters, Arun Thapa Chowk, Jhamsikhel unless otherwise announced
•    Participants will work on one story each, on a given theme over a 14 week time period. Theme TBA
•    Participation fee is Rs. 10,000
•    Participants will be given a small grant to cover travel and other related expenses while producing their stories
•    Works produced by participants will be exhibited and published. Photographers will retain copyrights. photo.circle reserves the right to publish, exhibit, distribute produced works for promotional purposes.
•    Application is open to Nepali citizens only.

17 June – Start-up workshop with Mads
Participants will discuss and finalize story ideas, view, discuss and deconstruct picture stories, start shooting. Mads will work with participants one on one to discuss progress. This will be a full week and participants should plan to spend full days at the workshop.

2728 June – Follow-up workshop with Mads
Participants will share work that they have produced in their own time since the start-up workshop, have group critiques.

28 June25 August
Participants will continue to shoot their stories independently, and have a minimum of 2 scheduled skype meetings with Mads and photo.circle. Participants are free to keep in touch with Mads and photo.circle over email as well.

2528 AugustEditing workshop
Participants will meet with Mads and Soren from Danish School of Media and Journalism to edit their stories.

30–31AugustWriting workshop
Participants will work with writers to begin developing text for their stories.

9 SeptemberFinal story submission deadline
Participants will submit their final stories, including text.

ABOUT THE PRINCIPLE MASTERCLASS TUTOR – MADS NISSEN
Mads Nissen is an award winning Danish photojournalist.  Most recently, he won a World Press award for his story ‘In the Name of Victoria’ which he shot in Nepal. Mads graduated from the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DSMJ) in 2007, and moved to Shanghai where he worked as a freelance photojournalist. In 2009, he was hired by the Danish newspaper, Berlingske Tidende. Since then, Mads has been based in Denmark, and has been conducting workshops at DSMJ for both Danish and international students. He is currently working on finishing up his long term personal project AMAZONAS which is soon to be published as a book.
