जल, जंगल, जमिन – संघर्ष र आकांक्षा

यही फागुन १९ र २० गते काठमाडौँको बबरमहलस्थित नेपाल आर्ट काउन्सिल परिसरमा फोटोसर्कल र इन्डिजिनियस विदाउट बोर्डर्सद्वारा ‘जल–जंगल–जमिन: संघर्ष र आकांक्षा’ विषयक दुई दिने गोष्ठी हुन गइरहेको यहाँहरूमा जानकारी गराउँदछौ ।

आदिवासी जनजाति, दलितलगायत सीमान्तकृत/बहिष्कृत वर्ग, समुदाय, लिङ्गका समूहहरूले जल–जंगल–जमिनको हक–अधिकारका लागि सङ्घर्षरत छन् । तसर्थ, गोष्ठीले अनुभवी स्रोत व्यक्तित्व, आलोचक विज्ञ, आन्दोलनका अगुवा, अनुसन्धाता र लेखकहरू तथा विश्लेषणात्मक चिन्तनलाई परस्परमा साटासाट गर्न एकै थलोमा ल्याउने छ ।

गोष्ठीमा हुने प्रस्तुति तथा छलफललाई लिखित तथा भिडियो दस्ताबेजका रूपमा संग्रह एवं सार्वजनिक गरिने छ । यस कार्यक्रमले पुराना सञ्जाल नवीकरण गर्ने र  नयाँ सम्बन्ध स्थापित गर्ने अवसर पनि प्रदान गर्ने छ ।

यो गोष्ठी सुधीर पटनायक/समद्रुष्टि तथा शेर्ना दस्तूरसँग सहकार्यमा अमर कन्वर द्वारा सिर्जित कला प्रदर्शनी ‘सार्वभौम वन’ सँगको संयोजनमा फोटोसर्कलले आयोजना गरेको हो ।

२०८० मङ्सिर २५ गतेदेखि सुरु भएको ‘सार्वभौम वन’ २०८० चैत्र १८ सम्म बबरमहलस्थित नेपाल आर्ट काउन्सिलमा प्रदर्शन गरिएको छ ।

सहभागीहरूलाई आवेदन प्रक्रिया पछिमात्र आमन्त्रण गरिनेछ।

Jal, Jungle, Jamin – Struggles and Aspirations

photo.circle and Indigenous without Borders (IwB) are pleased to present a two-day symposium on “Jal, Jungle, Jamin – Struggles and Aspirations” to be held from March 2-3, 2024 (Fagun 19-20) at Nepal Art Council, Babar Mahal, Kathmandu. 

The symposium will bring together activists, movement leaders, researchers and storytellers to share experiences and critical reflections of on-going movements as Adivasi, Janajati and Dalit communities continue their struggles for rights to jal, jungle, and jamin across Nepal. Presentations and discussions will be documented in both text and video. The gathering is also an opportunity to strengthen old networks and build new solidarities.     

The program is being organized in conjunction with the on-going exhibition The Sovereign Forest by Amar Kanwar in collaboration with Sudhir Pattnaik/Samadrusti and Sherna Dastur. The Sovereign Forest is hosted in Kathmandu by photo.circle and is on view at Nepal Art Council until March 31st.

Participants will be invited after an application process.

वक्ता परिचय

अजय दीक्षित जलवायु परिवर्तन, पानी प्रणालीको दृष्टिकोणबाट सामाजिक रुपान्तरणको अध्ययन गर्छन्। उनको अध्ययन अनुकुल सामाजिक समानता, न्यायोचित ऊर्जा रुपान्तरण र स्वस्थ प्राकृतिक इकोसिस्टमका लागि चाहिने कार्ययोजना बाट निर्देशित छ ।

अमर कन्वर का चलचित्र तथा मल्टिमिडिया कृतिले शक्ति, हिंसा तथा न्यायको राजनीतिको सुक्ष्म अध्ययन गर्दछन् । धेरै तहमा लुकेका अर्थसहितका उनका कृतिहरू प्राय: द्वन्द्व क्षेत्रबाट लिइएका कथानकमा आधारित हुन्छन् जसको काव्यात्मक चलचित्र शैलीले अनूभूति तथा बुझाइका विभिन्न तहलाई उजागर गर्छन् । कन्वरका कृतिको हालैका एकल प्रदर्शनीमा न्यू योर्कको म्युजियम अफ मोडर्न आर्ट, अमेरिका (सन् २०२३), शारजहा बिएनाले १५, संयुक्त अरब इमिरेट्स (सन् २०२३), कोची मुजिरिस बिएनाले, केरला, भारत (सन् २०२२), कास्टेलो दि रिभोली (सन् २०२२), मेट्रोपोलिटन म्युजियम अफ आर्ट, न्यू योर्क (सन् २०२२); इशारा आर्ट फाउण्डेशन दुबई (सन् २०२०); न्यू योर्क विश्वविद्यालय अबु धाबी आर्ट ग्यालरी, अबु धाबी (सन् २०२०) आदि पर्छन् । कन्वरले जर्मनीको क्यास्सेलमा सन् २००२, २००७, २०१२ र २०१७ का डकुमेन्टा ११, १२, १ ३, तथा १४ मा पनि सहभागिता जनाएका छन् । उनले प्रिन्स क्लाउस अवार्ड (सन् २०१७), लियोनोर एन्नेनबर्ग प्राइज फर आर्ट एण्ड सोसियल चेञ्ज (सन् २०१४), अमेरिकाको मेन कलेज अफ आर्टबाट ललितकलाका लागि मानार्थ विद्यावारिधि (सन् २००६), नर्वेको एडवार्ड मञ्च अवार्ड फर कन्टेम्पररी आर्ट (सन् २००५) अमेरिकाको सान फ्रान्सिस्को इन्टरनेशनल फिल्म फेस्टिभलमा गोल्डन गेट अवार्ड (सन् १९९९) तथा भारतको मुम्बई इन्टर्नेशनल फिल्म फेस्टिभलमा गोल्डेन कंक आदि सम्मान पाएका छन् ।

अरुण सदाः दुई दशकदेखि सामाजिक अभियन्ताको रुपमा संलग्न सदा भूमि अधिकारका क्षेत्रमा कार्यरत रहँदै आएका छन् । उनी राष्ट्रिय भूमि अधिकार मञ्चको सिरहा जिल्ला संयोजक तथा मुसहर समुदायको शिक्षा, नागरिकता र भूमि अधिकारको क्षेत्रमा क्रियाशील सबरी संकल्प समाज, गोलबजार, सिरहाको अध्यक्ष समेत हुन् ।

चिनीमाया माझीः दुई दशक बढी आदिवासी जनजाति आन्दोलनमा संलग्न अभियन्ता हुन् । उनी राष्ट्रिय आदिवासी जनजाति महिला महासंघका निवर्तमान अध्यक्ष तथा नेपाल माझी उत्थान संघको अध्यक्ष छन् । उनी नेटवर्क अफ इन्डिजिनियस वुमन इन एसियाको स्टेरिङ कमिटिका सदस्य समेत छन् ।

जनक राईः मिचिगन विश्वविद्यालयबाट मानवशास्त्रमा विद्यावारिधी गरेका राई त्रिभुवन विश्वविद्यालयको मानवशास्त्र केन्द्रीय विभागमा प्रध्यापनरत छन् । धिमाल आदिवासीमा गहिरो अध्ययन गरेका राईकोे आलेखहरू राष्ट्रिय–अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय जर्नल, पुस्तकहरूमा प्रकाशित छन् ।

जानकी नेपाली: समाजिक अभियन्ता तथा दलित अधिकारकर्मी हुन् । दुई दशकदेखि दलितका अधिकार र सवालमा काम गर्दै आएका नेपाली नदीय तट क्षेत्रमा मानववस्तीले भोग्नुपरेका पीडा, दु:ख र समस्या समाधानका लागि विगत डेढ दशकदेखि काम गरिरहेका छन् । प्राकृतिक विपतमा समेत उनीसँग काम गरेको अनुभव छ ।

कल्पना कुमालः लैंगिक अध्ययनमा विद्यावारिधी गरिरहेका कुमाल विकास र सामुदायिक वनको क्षेत्रमा करिब दुई दशक काम गरेको अुनभव छ । उनी नेपाल कुमाल समाजको सल्लाहकार समेत छन् ।

नेपाल डंगोलः जनसरोकार समिति खोनाको संयोजक हुन् । डंगोल नेवार आदिवासीको भूमि, सम्पदा, संस्कृतिको क्षेत्रमा दुई दशकदेखि एक्टिभिज्म गरिरहेका छन् । एक्टिभिज्मको दौरानमा उनी हिरासतमा पर्नुका साथै मुद्दासमेत खेपेका छन् ।

गौरी नेपालीः एक दशक बढी नेपालको क्वेयर आन्दोलनमा सक्रिय रहेकी नेपाली यौनिक तथा लैंगिक अल्पसंख्यकहरूको महासंघको पैरवी अधिकृत हुन् । दलित तथा लैंगिक हक अधिकारमा क्रियाशील नेपाली विभिन्न संघसंस्थाहरूमा आबद्ध रहनुका साथै लेखक तथा मेन्टर पनि हुन् ।

नन्द कन्दङ्वाः आदिवासी जनजाति आन्दोलन तथा सवालमा प्राज्ञिक योगदानका साथै निरन्तर एक्टिभिज्म गर्दै आएका कन्दङ्वा किरात याक्थुङ चुम्लुङको संस्थापक अध्यक्ष हुन् । आदिवासीको भूमि, भूक्षेत्र र प्राकृतिक स्रोतमा उनको विशेष दख्खल रहेका कन्दङ्वाको दर्जनौ पुस्तक, लेखरचनाहरू प्रकाशित छन् ।

जेबी विश्वकर्माः दलित आन्दोलनबारे प्राज्ञिक कर्म गरिरहेका विश्वकर्मा नागरिक आन्दोलनका अभियन्ता हुन् । दलितसम्बन्धी दर्जनौँ आलेख तथा पुस्तकहरू प्रकाशित गरेका विश्वकर्मा डिग्निटी इनिसियटिभका अध्यक्ष हुन् । उनी हाल कान्तिपुर दैनिकका स्तम्भकार छन् ।

छविलाल न्यौपानेः निकुञ्जहरूको कारणबाट सिर्जित समस्याहरूबारे दुई दशक बढी अध्ययन लेखन तथा एक्टिभिज्म गरेका न्यौपाने मध्यवर्ती क्षेत्र जनअधिकार महासंघ, नेपालका अध्यक्ष हुन् । उनी जैविक कृषिको प्रवद्र्धक, अभियन्ता र किसान हुन् ।

गीता चौधरीः त्रिभुवन विश्वविद्यालयबाट कानूनमा स्नात्तकोत्तर गरेका चौधरी मर्यादा फाउन्डेसनको बोर्ड सदस्य तथा थारू विद्यार्थी समाजको उपाध्यक्ष हुन् । उनी करिब एक दशकदेखि आदिवासी जनजाति, युवा, लैंगिक समानता, मानवअधिकारको क्षेत्रमा क्रियाशील छन् ।

डा. इन्द्र याम्फूः त्रिभुवन विश्वविद्यालय, शिक्षा संकायमा प्रध्यापनरत याम्फू काठमाडौं विश्वविद्यालयको स्कुल अफ एडुकेसनमा भिजिटिङ फ्याकल्टी समेत छन् । आदिवासीको शिक्षा र विकासको दर्शनसम्बन्धी विज्ञ याम्फूका दर्जनौ लेखहरू जर्नल र पुस्तकहरूमा प्रकाशित छन् ।

कैलाश राईः समाज विज्ञानकी अध्येता, सम्पादक तथा मेन्टर हुन् । लैंगिकता, आदिवासी जनजाति, यौनिकता र सामाजिक न्यायकेन्द्रित उनका लेख र पुस्तक प्रकाशित छन् । उनी मार्टिन चौतारी र इन्डिजिनियस विदाउट बोर्डर्ससँग आबद्ध छन् ।

गोबिन्द छन्त्यालः आदिवासी जनजाति आन्दोलनमा दुई दशक बढी समयदेखि सक्रिय रहँदै आएका छन्त्याल नेपाल आदिवासी जनजाति महासंघका निवर्तमान उपाध्यक्ष हुन् । आदिवासी जनजातिका विभिन्न संघसंस्थामा आबद्ध रही आदिवासीबारे लेख्दै, बोल्दै र सामेल हुँदै आएका छन्त्याल नागरिक आन्दोलनमा समेत सक्रिय छन् । उनी इन्डिजिनियस विदाउट बोर्डर्ससँग आबद्ध छन् ।

भाष्कर गौतमः जापानको क्योटो विश्वविद्यालयबाट विद्यावारिधि गरेका गौतमका राजनीति, समाज आदिमाथि दर्जनौ लेख, पुस्तकहरू प्रकाशित छन् । नागरिक आन्दोलनमा सक्रिय गौतम विभिन्न आन्दोलनबारे प्राज्ञिक योगदान समेत गर्दै आएका छन् । उनी नर्थ साउथ कलेक्टिभमा आबद्ध छन् ।

सविन निङ्लेखु: क्यानडाको टोरन्टो विश्वविद्यालयबाट भूगोलमा विद्यावारिधि गरेका निङ्लेखु अनुसन्धाता हुन् । भूगोल, समाज, राजनीति आदि विषयमा लेख्ने निङ्लेखुका राष्ट्रिय तथा अन्र्तराष्ट्रिय जर्नल र पत्रपत्रिकाहरूमा लेख प्रकाशित छन् ।

सुधिर पट्नायक: सन् १९६२ मा जन्मिनुभएका र हाल भारतकाे ओडिशा राज्यकाे भुवनेश्वरमा बसोबास गर्दै आउनुभएका सुधिर पट्नायक एक स्वतन्त्र मिडिया अभियन्ता हुनुहुन्छ । विगत ३५ वर्षदेखि सामाजिक मुद्दामा मिहिन रूपमा काम गर्दै आउनुभएका पट्नायक समद्रुष्टि कलेक्टिभ नामक सामाजिक संस्थाकाे माध्यमबाट विभिन्न प्रिन्ट तथा अनलाइन खबर पत्रिकासँग आबद्ध हुनुहुन्छ । उहाँ द्वैमासिक पत्रिका ‘द समद्रुष्टि’ काे सम्पादकका अलवा एक गीतकार, नाटककार र नाटक निर्देशक पनि हो । स्वतन्त्र विचार र धर्म निरपेक्षतामा विश्वास गर्ने पट्नायक निडर अल्पसङ्ख्यकले देखाएको माया र सद्भावले मात्र समाजमा दिगाे परिवर्तन ल्याउन सक्छ भन्ने कुरामा आस्था राख्नुहुन्छ । पट्नायकले २०११ देखि ‘सार्वभौँम वन’को लागि सहकार्य गर्नुभएकाे छ र सन् २०१६ डिसेम्बरमा याे अस्थायी रूपमा बन्द हुनुअघिसम्म समद्रुष्टि क्याम्पस ओडिशामा ‘सार्वभौँम वन’को प्रदर्शन पनि गर्दै आउनुभएकाे थियाे ।

सोमत घिमिरे प्राकृतिक स्रोत विज्ञ हुन् । उनी जल, जंगल, जमिन, संघीयता, राज्यको पुनर्संरचना, स्थानीयता र राजनीति आदिबारे लेख्दै आएका छन् । उनका दर्जनौ पुस्तक तथा दर्जनौ लेखहरू प्रकाशित छन् ।

नयनतारा गुरूङ कक्षपति फोटो सर्कल, नेपाल पिक्चर लाइब्रेरी र फोटो काठमान्डुका सहसंस्थापक हुन् । भिजुअलको माध्यमबाट कथा–इतिहासलाई दस्ताबेजीकरण गरी विविध तवरले आम जनमानससित संवाद गर्न गराउन उनी रूची राख्छन् ।

श्रद्धा घलेः श्रद्धा नेपाली समाज र राजनितिको बारेमा घलेको लेख विभिन्न पत्रपत्रिकामा छापिएको छ । उनको धेरै लेखहरु विकास परियोजना र संरक्षण नितिको सीमान्तकृत समुदायमा पर्ने असरका बारेमा छन् ।

Speakers Introduction

Ajaya Dixit studies social transition at the intersection of climate change, water system and adaptive actions guided by the approaches to just energy transition, healthy natural ecosystem and social equity.

Amar Kanwar: Amar Kanwar‘s films and multi-media works explore the politics of power, violence and justice. His multi-layered installations originate in narratives often drawn from zones of conflict and are characterised by a poetic cinematic vocabulary that open up multiple layers of experience and comprehension. Recent solo and group exhibitions of Kanwar’s work have been held at Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA (2023); Sharjah Biennale 15, UAE (2023), Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Kerala, India (2022); Castello Di Rivoli, Turin (2022), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2022); Ishara Art Foundation, Dubai (2020); NYUAD Art Gallery, Abu Dhabi (2020) among others. Kanwar has participated in Documenta 11, 12, 13 and 14 in Kassel, Germany (2002, 2007, 2012, 2017). He has been the recipient of awards such as the Prince Claus Award (2017); Leonore Annenberg Prize for Art and Social Change (2014); an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts, Maine College of Art, USA (2006); the Edvard Munch Award for Contemporary Art, Norway (2005); the Golden Gate Award, San Francisco International Film Festival, USA (1999), as well as the Golden Conch, Mumbai International Film Festival, India (1998)

Arun Sada: With two decades of experience as a land rights social activist, Sada is the Siraha district coordinator for National Land Rights Forum. He is also the president Sabari Sankalpa Samaj in Golbazar, Siraha which works towards creating access to education, citizenship and land rights for the Musahar community.

Chinimaya Majhi: Chinimaya Majhi is an activist involved in the indigenous nationalities movement for more than two decades. She is the former president for National Indigenous Women’s Federation as well as current president for the Nepal Majhi Utthan Sangh. In addition, she is also a steering committee member for Network of Indigenous Women in Asia.

Janak Rai: Janak Rai completed his doctorate in anthropology from University of Michigan and teaches anthropology at Tribhuvan University’s central department. He has conducted extensive research on the Indigenous Dhimal community and his writings has been published in several national- international journals and books.

Janaki Nepali: Janaki Nepali is a social activist and a Dalit rights advocate. For the last two decades she has been working to solve the problems and suffering faced by human settlements along Nepali riverbanks. She also has experience working during natural calamities.

Kalpana Kumal: Currently pursuing a doctorate in gender studies, Kumal has nearly two decades of work experience in development and community forest. She is also an advisor for Nepal Kumal Society.

Nepal Dangol: Nepal Dangol is the coordinator for public concern committee, Khona. Dangol has been an activist for the last two decades to conserve Newar indigenous land, heritage and tradition. He has been arrested and faced legal charges for his activism.

Gauri Nepali: Active in queer movement for over a decade, Gauri Nepali is the advocacy officer for Federation of Gender and Sexual Minorities-Nepal. Involved in Dalit and gender rights activism, Nepali is associated with several organizations. She also works as a writer and a mentor.

Nanda Kandangwa: Nanda Kandangwa has made academic contribution to Indigenous Nationalities issues and movement. A regular activist, Kandangwa is the founding president of Kirant Yakthung Chumlung. An expert on Indigenous rights to land, territories and resources, Kandangwa has published several books and articles.

JB Bishwakarma: Invested in academic work on Dalit movement, Bishwakarma is a greater citizens’ movement activist. The president of Dignity Initiative, Bishwakarma has published several writings and books on Dalit issues. He is a columnist for Kantipur daily.

Chhabilal Neupane: President of Buffer Zone Area People’s Rights Federation, Neupane has more than two decades of experience researching, writing on the problems created by national parks. He is a promoter of organic farming in addition to being a farmer and an activist.

Gita Chaudhary: Gita Chaudhary has a Master of Law degree from Tribhuvan University, and is a board member for Maryada foundation and the vice president for Tharu Student Society. For the last ten years, she has been actively working in t issues relating to indigenous nationalities, youth, gender equality and human rights.

Dr Indra Yampu: Yamphu teaches in the education department in Tribhuvan University. He is also a visiting faculty at Kathmandu University school of education. Yampu’s writings has been published in several journals and books on Indigenous people education and development philosophy, of which he is an expert.

Kailash Rai: Kailash Rai is a social science researcher, editor and mentor. Her published writings and book center issues concerning gender, sexuality, indigenous nationalities and social justice. She is associated with Martin Chautari and Indigenous Without Borders.

Gobinda Chhantyal: Active in Indigenous Nationalities movement for over two decades, Chhantyal was a former vice president of Nepal Federation of indigenous Nationalities. Associated with various Indigenous nationalities organization, Chhantyal has been writing and advocating for Indigenous people and is also active in the greater citizens’ movement. He is also associated with Indigenous Without Borders.

Bhaskar Gautam: Bhaskar Gautam received his doctorate from Kyoto University in Japan and has published several writings and books on politics, society and other issues. Active in the greater citizens’ movement, Gautam has also made academic contributions to different movements. He is associated with North South Collective.

Sabin Ninglekhu: Ninglekhu is a researcher and has a doctorate in geography from Toronto University in Canada. He writes on geography, society, politics and other issues and has been published in various national and international journals and newspapers.

Sudhir Pattnaik: Sudhir Pattnaik (born 1962, lives in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India) is an independent media activist who has been intensely engaged in social issues for the last 35 years. He is associated with print and electronic news magazines as a part of non-profit collective Samadrusti, and is the editor of fortnightly Oriya news magazine _The Samadrusti_. He is also a lyricist, playwright, and theatre director. His views are non-ideological and secular. He “firmly believes that it is only love and peace preached, practiced, and propagated by the bold and the brave minority that may bring lasting change in society.” Pattnaik has collaborated on The Sovereign Forest since 2011, and has hosted its installation in the Samadrusti campus in Odisha since 2012, until it was temporarily closed in December 2016.

Somat Ghimire: Somat Ghimire is a natural resource expert. He has been writing on water, forest, land, federalization, state restructuring, localization and politics. He has published several books and essays.

NayanTara Gurung Kashapati: NayanTara Gurung Kashyapati is the cofounder of Photo Circle, Nepal Picture Library and Photo Kathmandu. She is interested in archiving history through the visual medium to create in creating various discourses among the general populace.

Shradha Ghale has written about Nepali society and politics for various publications. Many of her articles focused on the impact of development projects and conservation policy on marginalized communities.
