Intro to Storytelling – Oct 2020 (online edition)

PHOTO: ROJAN SHRESTHA

Stories help us understand each other and the many worlds that we live in. Who is doing the storytelling? This determines which worlds are made visible to us.

This intensive two-week workshop is designed for photographers who have a basic understanding of digital photography and now want to take their skills to the next level. The workshop will introduce photographers to working on narratives and telling stories. Participants will be introduced to a wide variety of visual styles and languages. They will be supported to produce a body of work in the duration of the workshop, taking all necessary safety precautions. Shooting at home, without venturing out, is a viable option. Participants should be prepared to work hard and push their limits!

ABOUT THE MENTORS:

Bunu Dhungana discovered photography after leaving the world of academics and research. However, her background in sociology informs her photographic work. A graduate of JNU, Delhi, she is interested in questioning notions of gender and patriarchy. While she focuses on personal projects that center around women’s issues, she has worked within a wide range – from visual ethnography, NGO/INGO work to commercial work. She loves roaming about places, people-watching, and eavesdropping. She lives and works in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Prasiit Sthapit is a visual storyteller based in Kathmandu. In 2016, he was the recipient of the Magnum Emergency Fund Grant and has also been selected for the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass.

He is currently associated with Fuzz Factory Productions, a multimedia collective based in Kathmandu and Photo Kathmandu.

Shikhar Bhattarai is a freelance photographer based in Kathmandu, Nepal. His passion for photography developed when he started to understand the power of the visual medium as a way to share stories. He is particularly interested in travel and documentary photography. An avid traveller, he has traversed across many parts of his diverse country, and is interested in its geographical and anthropological histories and narratives.

Sagar Chhetri is a Kathmandu based photographer. He explores the narratives of politics, identity, and representation in his works. In 2018 he received the Magnum Foundation Fund for his work “Eclipse”. He was a visiting artist fellow 2019-2020 at the South Asia Institute, Harvard University. He is a participant of Joop Swart Masterclass 2020 organized by World Press Photo.
