Ashok R. Shakya
Ashok R. Shakya Born in Katmandu in 1968, Ashok R. Shakya is freelance photographer and French language teacher at the Alliance Francaise of Kathmandu. Self made photographer, Shakya began photography in 1996 as advanced amateur/ semi- professional focusing his attention on portraits, street life, landscape, social issues and photojournalism. In a little over ten years, Shakya has exhibited his work widely, including solo shows in Katmandu and France. His work has received numerous awards including, the prix Beaumarchais from a French renown association “ Association Beaumarchais” in Paris (2005), the Pakistan television prize at a photo contest organized by Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO in Japan (1999), the American Express Prize at photo contest organized by Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO in Japan ( 1998) etc. Shakya’s hobbies include trekking, literature, music (classical, rock, jazz, world music), swimming and cycling. His favorite photographers are Salgado Sebastiao, Paul Strand, William Klein and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Slideshow from everest
As many other photographers, he turned to digital media. He still takes pictures from negatives. These pictures were his last images taken from transparent film in October 2005 in Everest region.
