Living On the Edge documents life on the Myanmar-Thailand border, which has seen a massive spillover of refugees from the repressive regime in Burma. It particularly focuses on the Karen, an ethnic minority which faces extreme persecution as the Karen National Liberation Army seeks to protect their rights. Taken over a period of three months in border towns, refugees camps, and inside Burma, this visual story seeks to show the human side of life as a refugee.

With her photos Silvia tries to get to the point of a scene, which often enough can be viewed in a humorous way. Especially the animal motives, of which she was able to discover a lot, lend themselves to be interpreted from a human point -of -view. Silvia says she also likes animal photography because animals don't feel they have to pose, and they don't ask for rupees…

The Dockyard

Everyone at the Sadarghat Dockyard in Bangladesh worked very hard. It was dangerous work. The dockyard had no life of its own but the people working there had lives outside of it.
In this project, I concentrated on the use of symbolism and the use of color. The hanging anchor you see is like an axe. The red background is a symbol of revolution. There is a unique relationship between the anchor and the water.
